Once we worked up the design and the fabric for our own bespoke project bag, The Billie, we saw that it was possible to make PRECISELY what we want in a knittingneedle roll.

There are options out there for storing your knittingneedles, but none were precisely what we wanted. They were either too long to be really portable, didn't hold all that many knittingneedles and still close, or didn't aim to be portable at all and just weren't pleasing to look at. Cadence had a vintage one that she just loved, that she could fit into a tote without taking up too much room. And since she knew just the fabric that she wanted to use and had a seamstress on call, The Haystack was born 💫

We've been working with Tallahasseean, Jenny Bickley, owner of Honey Bee Fabrications, to get the right features. When I say, Girl-Made Bags, we really mean it! Jenny guided us as we got it right:

• 15 pockets to hold your circular knittingneedles, hooks, awesome tool and pen
• Squishability; we wanted texture to the fabric and also wanted to be able to squish down into our larger totes/backpacks
• A flap so that you don't have worry which way you're holding your Haystack to keep everything inside
• The right cord to tie up the roll
• a light-ish, smooth cotton lining, to be cheery but not add weight

We turned to our friends Marianne and Katy at Katrinkles to make The Haystack even more useful. We wanted a way for you to:

• quickly identify what size knittingneedle you have in hand (who can read that tiny print on there??). Our knittingneedle sizing tool was made to match our beloved fabric AND fit just perfectly into The Haystack's pockets
• organize and file away your knittingneedles by labeling each pocket so that you know where to put your tools away (can be used for crochet hooks too!)

And back to Jenny, who guided us to a local-ish fabric printer. Chris and Eric in Panama City, Florida sent us a booklet of fabric options so that we could feel, squish, and hold the outside and the lining together, until we had just what we wanted. We chose a linen cotton blend for the outside and cotton for the inside. 

This bag also boasts a very small carbon footprint, having traveled only 125 miles so far in printing the fabric and sewing the design. 🚚. Ilona, our illustrator is in Europe, all of that work was done digitally 💻
