Fuzzy’s Go-To Fingering Weight Shawls
Hello again Goat Gang! Today we’re starting a new series here on the blog where we go around the store and gather up a list of patterns for you guys who maybe aren’t local and can’t wander physically around our cozy lodge searching for just the right project you want to go along with the yarn you’re so excited about! This is by far both the hardest and most thrilling part of knitting – the moment you pick what you’re going to invest all that time and love in!
Let’s start with fingering weight shawls! These are all beginner-friendly to somewhat-moderate-level and many only use one or two skeins.
All can be found on Ravelry. Click on the name of the pattern to be linked over there!
These are all knitted, but crocheters, we’re working on a separate post just for you!
1. REYNA by Noora Backlund
What we like about it: It’s one skein, the pattern is free on Rav, and it’s very beginner friendly! Works great for highly variegated yarns and is perfect for if you have a unique or offbeat skein you love but truly don’t know what to do with. Looks good in both lighter and darker colorways. (knit by Carolina)
Notes: Very easily modified (for example, we love adding a different colored border edge)
Suggested yarn: Copper Corgi Savannah Sock/anything variegated!
2. REWILDING by Helen Stewart
What we like about it: It has tassels!!!
Notes: Looks great with two colors, switching over at the lace panel edge (or just do the tassels a different color!) – lots of room for creativity in your color choice here! (knit by Cadence)
Suggested yarn: We used some Emma’s but any fingering will do!
3. SONOYA by Tamy Gore
What we like about it: One skein, beginner friendly, and you’re supporting a BIPOC pattern designer! (knit by Cadence)
Notes: Great for variegated skeins!
Suggested yarn: Copper Corgi Savannah Sock
4. TAMDOU by Melanie Berg
What we like: This is the shop sample we get the most comments/questions on! It is a statement piece. The color choices make all the difference here. (knit by Susan)
Notes: A slightly more moderately difficult project, but if you’ve gotten a few other projects under your belt and want to try something fun, this is it! Choose colors that have a lot of contrast (don’t be afraid of bold/bright/offbeat color combos here!).
Suggested yarn: We used Copper Corgi and Sew Happy Jane – you don’t have to use 100% yarn from the same dyer! Mix and match.
5. STORM SHAWL by Joji Locatelli
What we like: A great way to try out drop stitches (don’t be afraid), beginner friendly, one skein, a great first or second project, and from Joji Locatelli, a shop favorite pattern designer. (knit by Susan)
Notes: We changed colors when we got to the border picot edge though the pattern doesn’t call for it – we love the way this looks with an unexpected pop of color on the end!
Suggested yarn: ANY fingering you like – pick a color you love if it’s your first shawl.
We have Copper Corgi or Neighborhood Fiber Co. in stock!
6. FREE YOUR FADE by Andrea Mowry
What we like: Very adjustable to your preference! Some use one color, some up to a dozen colors! Great for those who want some creative freedom! (knit by Susan)
Notes: We used three skeins in three different colors though the greens in our shop sample are very similar and it looks like we used two colors. We’d recommend using at least three colors that have some subtle tonality/speckling to them and are in the same color family but you get to decide!
Suggested yarn: Neighborhood Fiber Co. has some gorgeous tonal colors! Or Farmer’s Daughter! Or use a Sock Love Bundle (yarn only)
7. BIRDS OF A FEATHER by Andrea Mowry
What we like: Really delicate, soft, and feminine! And you get to add some textured fuzziness because it uses mohair! (knit by Elaine)
Notes: Great for soft colorways and yarn with a % of silk in it.
Suggested yarn: KnitWise Fibers MCS and Suri Silk (low in stock at the moment, sorry!)
8. FABULOSITY by Casapinka
What we like: Called “fabulosity,” Casapinka’s term for “over the top wonderful,” this one is dramatic in all the best ways! Another statement piece. Rich and a little art deco, we love that you also get the chance to play around with color choice! (knit by Elaine)
Notes: This one is a little more on the moderately difficult side than some of the others on this list if you’re a beginner. Can be done in bright colors as shown on Rav, but also don’t be afraid to try it in more muted tones if you don’t like super bright colors!
Suggested yarn: Emma’s
9. WHISKYFIED by Melanie Berg
What we like: It’s got such a fun name!!! (knit by Susan)
Notes: Looks amazing in neutral colored yarn with subtle speckles.
Suggested yarn: Farmer’s Daughter or Less Travelled Yarn
10. DOTTED RAYS by Stephen West
What we like: Again, it can be modified to suit you both in color and size! Can be done in one color or two or three. You can even make it striped like a rainbow! (knit by Susan)
Suggested yarn: Any fingering!
11. LIGHTWEIGHT HIPSTER by Joji Locatelli
What we like: It’s the perfect project for beginners but doesn’t sacrifice stylishness! (knit by Elaine)
Notes: Looks best in a mostly solid colorway! And don’t skimp out on the fringe at the end! One skein.
Suggested yarn: Farmer’s Daughter, Less Travelled Yarn or Neighborhood Fiber Co.
12. EVOLVE by Joji Locatelli
What we like: It has a super unusual shape we love! Can be worn like a square wrap around the shoulders as well as in a typical looped shawl style! (knit by Susan)
Notes: Looks great in neutrals! More of a moderate level.
Suggested yarn: Emma’s or even our Sock Love bundle (yarn only version)
13. SETTLER SHAWL by Libby Johnson
What we like: One skein, the criss-cross border at the edge is easy but fun! (knit by Elaine)
Notes: Looks good in a bold, block color
Suggested yarn: Any fingering! Neighborhood Fiber Co. would work nicely!
14. STAY HIGH by Cadence Kidwell
What we like: One skein, the palm trees, the tassels! (knit by Cadence)
Notes: Looks good in a solid or a speckle yarn
Suggested yarn: Any fingering! Copper Corgi Savannah Sock would be great!
Wow! That should keep you goats busy for a little while!
We’ll do another installment soon!
Love,
Fuzzy!
